Knowing When It’s Time for a New Towbar

As the old saying goes ‘nothing lasts forever’ and this is true for towbars. After many years of successful hitches to your caravan or trailer, to get you out of the hustle and bustle of Sydney, your towbar just won’t be able to cut anymore. You wouldn’t expect a person to carry such heavy weights year after year without becoming a little tired so why should you expect anything different from a towbar?

If towbars need to be replaced every few years or so how do you know when it’s time?

Pins
There are plenty of pins on both your towbar and the hook-up for whatever it is that you’re towing. Get up close and personal with every single one and look for any signs that they’re getting worn out.

Bolts
The bolts on your towbar are what gives it a little flexibility. If you want your towbar to last it needs to have some flexibility otherwise the first bump you hit or corner you go around will see the whole thing snapping off or breaking apart. Make sure all your bolts are in the right spot and in properly. Try and get your towbar running through a full range of motion to make sure the bolts aren’t too loose or too tight.

There’s really not all that much to do when it comes to checking on your towbar but if these crucial parts aren’t working then things can very easily go pear-shaped and could end in disaster. The best way to ensure that your towbar lasts for as long as possible is to look after it, keep it clean of dust and grime and don’t overstress it by towing weights it wasn’t made for.
