Caravan Towing Safety

Caravan Driving Etiquette

  • Be a courteous driver and keep to the far-left lane. This way, you avoid holding up other drivers stuck behind your van.
  • Always stay alert, be vigilant, and keep note of the space you and your fellow motorists need to stay safe. Check your towing mirror regularly to see the condition of traffic behind you.
  • Give way to smaller vehicles when driving on narrow roads.
  • If you see a road train or semi coming, particularly on a dirt or gravel road, consider pulling right off the road and allowing them to pass, but only if it is safe to do so.
  • When meeting other RV drivers on the road, it is polite to give them the old ‘nod of the head’. We are a small community after all and it is good to have a friendly vibe with our fellow caravanners.

Caravan Park Etiquette

  • Park your caravan and car on the space designated for you. Make sure that you do not cross other’s pitch when you set up your space.
  • Read the caravan site rules and make sure that everyone in your group knows them.
  • Always introduce yourself to your neighbours, especially if you are a newbie. You never know, they may give you some great advice or tips about what to expect or special places to visit.
  • Even if a park is pet-friendly, it does not necessarily mean that everyone on the site are animal lovers so it is best to keep your furry friend under control at all times.
  • Always monitor the noise coming from your site, especially after 11pm. Keep your music down, your television set at an acceptable volume, and your children's voices low. If your kids want to play, most camp grounds have designated areas for children to play.
  • Always make sure your bikes or other loose items are not left as tripping hazards for others who may be navigating the Park after dark.
  • Do not wash or do the laundry in unmarked areas. Always use the facilities provided by the Park.
  • Have a rubbish bin handy at all times. Not only does it keep the grounds clean but it easy to dispose of – just make sure to throw all your garbage in the designated area before leaving the grounds.
  • Always wash down the dump station after emptying your waste tanks.

Caravan Etiquette

  • Keep your caravan tidy. Everything should have its place so if you need it urgently you know where to find it.
  • Keep your rubbish in the correct bin so that you can easily throw them out when you reach a pit stop.
  • Never waste water. Remember that you only have limited water storage.

Having a memorable holiday is more than just the photos of the destination – it is the friends you meet on the way and the adventures you share with family and friends. Please let us know if you have any other tips and tricks on how to have a friendly and sociable caravanning holiday.
