Packing up the trailer or caravan and setting out onto the Hume, the Stuart, or Great Northern highways is the first taste of travel for many Australians, according to data collected by Wotif.com, an Australian reservation service for accommodation and flights. Not just the realm of the grey nomad, campervan travels tempt both young and old because of its affordability and convenience.

Sydney travelers have it easy

Sydneysiders are in a prime location for a road trip – just a two-hour drive to Newcastle, a nine-hour to Byron Bay, four hours to Forster. To almost anywhere in Australia you want to go, you can get there from Sydney by car in a day or less – so why wouldn’t you?

Surveying more than 37,000 travellers, Wotif found that the classic family road trip topped the travel priority list for novice travellers.

A spokesperson from Wotif said that almost 70 per cent of the site’s travellers had travelled to their holiday destination by car, compared to just 15 per cent who had travelled by plane.

On the road, off the road

The survey also noted an increase in bookings for holiday and caravan parks across Australia, which is probably (at least, in part) due to the sheer abundance of them – there are almost 560 parks scattered around Australia and listed on the travel website. The old stigma that holiday parks were for “roughing it” circumstances is shifting, as many parks today now offer 4 star and above accommodation as well as the traditional camping options.

Holiday and caravan parks also generally have the advantage of being in unbeatable prime locations, such as lush bushland or right on the beachfront, for a fraction of the price of a hotel or motel. Our personal state favourites make the most out of their nature-filled surrounds while also being self-contained with amenities and activities for the young and old.

Take a furry mate

According to the survey, another reason for the popularity of the road trip was the fact that man’s best friend was allowed to come along, too. Almost half of the survey’s respondents said that they take their pets on holiday. Caravan parks are the most popular pet-friendly accommodation choice, with over a third of respondents saying they would stay at one with their furry friend.
